Study Skills Workshops

Study Skills Workshops are designed to improve your learning skills and help you achieve your academic goals. Organized by Academic and Career Services, this series of workshops is FREE to all students.  

The next offering is September 2026.  The topics for the workshops are described below.  Please check back in August for dates/times/locations and an online registration form.  

Attend 6 Study Skills sessions within one academic year to receive a Foundations of Academic Success Certificate of Recognition, a valuable addition to your portfolio. Progress Booklets are available to pick up at all Study Skills workshops. Collect 2 attendance stamps and receive a free branded highlighter.

Study Skills Workshop Topics:

Class Participation, Note-taking & Presentations 

Class participation, note-taking, and presentation skills are crucial to getting the most out of your classes. This workshop will lay out strategies for getting more involved in class discussions, and for creating clear, concise, and meaningful notes that will help you with future assignments and at exam time. It will also discuss tips for class presentations, including how to conquer those performance jitters!

Tips for Writing Academic Essays 

This workshop will present the basic elements and steps required to ensure you have a well-written academic paper. The writing process, from brainstorming to editing, and the use of citations will be discussed.

Goal Setting & Time Management

All students have a host of priorities pulling for their attention, including school work, social commitments, work, self-care time, among so many more… How do you find time to do it all? This workshop will allow you to reflect on your many priorities and give you some tools to get the most out of your limited time to better reach your short- term and long-term goals.

Memory & Test-Taking Strategies 

Don’t like taking tests or exams? Are you looking for new ways to improve your performance? This workshop will provide you with simple techniques to improve your memory and prepare for tests and exams. Study smarter not harder!

Reading Strategies & Critical Thinking

Does reading make you sleepy? Do you spend a lot of time reading or rereading without really knowing what you’ve read? This workshop will provide you with easy-to-use reading techniques that will help you read more effectively. This workshop will also review the attitudes associated with critical thinking and ways in which you can read, write, speak, and listen more effectively to become a critical thinker.

Start at your Library 

As a UWinnipeg student, you have access to a huge catalog of academic sources such as books, journals, magazines, and videos online, leaving many students to ask, where do I start? How do I find all the information I need to complete my research and assignments? Come join the UWinnipeg librarians to learn some strategies for taking full advantage of our wonderful library collection.

Dealing with School-related Stress

Many students experience anxiety related to taking exams or tests which can result in marks that don’t reflect their knowledge and ability. Some students become overwhelmed with negative thoughts and emotions. This workshop will present ways to help you manage them so they do not interfere with your ability to make effective class presentations or to do well on tests and exams.
